About the Foundation

The Peggy and Jack Baskin Foundation was founded in 2008 to center the margin, creating and supporting strategies to reach gender and racial equity. We focus on intersectional feminism to improve the lives of women, girls, and gender-expansive individuals and promote educational equity for all community members. The Peggy and Jack Baskin Foundation believes that intersectionality is an essential principle in our work and we intentionally prioritize women, girls, and gender-expansive individuals of color throughout our programming.

Grant Program

The Peggy and Jack Baskin Foundation awards grants to nonprofit organizations primarily in Monterey and Santa Cruz Counties (the tribal lands of the Amah Mutsun, Ohlone, Chalon, Awaswas, and Esselen nations), occasionally in the Greater San Francisco Bay Area, and organizations and programs with statewide impact across California or national impact across the US. We fund solutions for each of the barriers women, girls, and gender-expansive individuals face. The Foundation does not accept unsolicited proposals.

Our Inspiration

“I am not free while any woman is unfree, even when her shackles are very different from my own.”

Audre Lorde

“The way we imagine discrimination or disempowerment often is more complicated for people who are subjected to multiple forms of exclusion. The good news is that intersectionality provides us a way to see it.”

Kimberlé Crenshaw

“We’ve begun to raise daughters more like sons… but few have the courage to raise our sons more like our daughters.”

Gloria Steinem

“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”

Martin Luther King, Jr.

“Dominant groups often go unchallenged in society, and their power and privilege goes unexamined.”

Jackson Katz

“If it would destroy a 12-year-old boy to be called a girl, what are we then teaching him about girls?”

Tony Porter

“And there comes a time when we must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but one must take it because it is right.”

Martin Luther King, Jr.

“I am no longer accepting the things I cannot change. I am changing the things I cannot accept.”

Angela Davis

I try to be as honest about what I see and to speak rather than be silent, especially if it means I can save lives, or serve humanity.
